Premier Apartments Newcastle – Blog on Newcastle
Welcome at

Another year sees the annual Great North Run.  This year the run takes place on Sunday 19th September and this year it celebrates its 30th Birthday!

Great North Run 2010

The run is the nations biggest half-marathon with over fifty thousands of runners expected to participate.  The course is a 13.1 mile trek across Tyneside, starting on the Great North Road and ends on the coast in South Shields.  Luckily for the runners the course is reasonably flat but there is a bit of a hill about 5 miles in at the Junction – the Premier Apartments team will be there to cheer you on for extra encouragement!

The Great North Run has grown over the years and each race has its own unique experience.   Marking the 30th Anniversary there are a number of special events taking place including the Junior and mini-run on Saturday the 18th.  There are many other great runs and events being held in the lead-up to the main ru, details available online.

Its expected that by next years race the 1,000,000 th person will have crossed the finish line since the event began back in 1981 when just 12,000 athletes joined in, over the decades this figure has rocketed and numbers are expected at this years race to be in the region of 54,000.   More than £10 million has been raised for good causes.

Its not all just for athletes there are a number of people racing in weird and wacky fancy dress costumes which makes the race even harder for them!

If your not joining in this year live coverage is shown on TV.  Good luck to all that are racing this year!!!

We’re certainly not short of pubs in Newcastle to watch football in, but with so much choice it can be difficult to decide.  So if you’re wondering where to watch the World Cup in Newcaslte centre these pubs might tickle your fancy:

About 5 minutes walk down Westgate Road you’ll come to the corner of Grey Street and our favourite Newcastle pub the Vineyard.  It’s a great choice whether for civilised pre-dinner drink, post-theatre nightcap or watch a match.  The excellent beer selection is only beaten by the wine choice – after a couple drinks you’ll inevitably need to visit the toilets and theirs are incredibly cool.

The best Newcastle pub to watch the World Cup Final has to be the Tyne Bar on Mailing Street.  It’s just over 2km walk so about 30 minutes or 5 if you hop in a taxi.  A civilised blend of lovingly brewed local real ales, comfy sofas and large beer garden for those sunny summer afternoons combine to make this a great place to hangout on Sunday, soak up the atmosphere and cheer on your team.  If you’re feeling peckish they have great selection of nibbles or try house specialty Beef & Onion Stottie.

For a comfortable, laid back venue you can’t beat the Waterline.  As you’d expect its near the Tyne so about 15 – 20 minutes walk from the Apartments.  On warm sunny evenings its great to sit out on the Quayside and enjoy fantastic views of the Millennium Bridge.

Staying with venues down at Quayside another of our top recommendations is Pitcher & Piano.  Opposite the Baltic Contemporary Arts Museum and its trendy style complements the location.  We’ve always found the staff attentive and friendly and it attracts the “young professional” crowd with great range of beers and wines by the glass.  The match will be shown on the big screens and if you’re in need of a nibble try the mix and match Grazing & Sharing options.

The Cluny, Newcastle

A little bit further on the road to the Byker Bridge in the new arts and crafts district is The Cluny.  A former whisky bottling plant the venue retains much of the charm and character of its former life.  This is a great choice for footie mad families and the gallery section with large sofas is family friendly.

We appreciate how difficult it is to make plans at the moment – you can’t be sure if flights will be disrupted and you won’t be able to travel or you’ll be delayed for an extra day or two coming home so at Premier Apartments we’ve created our charter to assure you that, if you are affected, we’ll look after you.  Our volcanic air charter will help you plan your business travel without fear of loosing your investment in money or time should your flight be cancelled.

It’s time for some early 90’s nostalgia with the return of Shakespears Sister to the Newcastle O2 Academy this April.  We were huge fans back in the day and can’t wait to see Siobhan Fahey live again on Sunday 18th April.  The lineup is set to include the international number 1 Stay, other old favourites and some of Siobhan’s new work from her 2009 album Songs from the Red Room.

In May you can catch Jamie Cullum’s live performance in Newcastle, he’ll be just back in the country after a leg of his world tour including Singapore and Sydney to promote his latest album Verve.  Word is there are only a few tickets left so we recommend booking now so you don’t miss out.  Jamie’s catalogue includes a diverse range of styles from swinging standards, yearning confessionals to thumping house dance tracks and even Broadway ballads so there truly is something for everyone.  He’ll be lighting up Newcastle City Hall on Tuesday 11thMay as he works his way around the country.

If you’re looking for great value hotels near Newcastle City Hall why not check-in with us for a little extra comfort, luxury and space?  It’s only a 2km walk from the apartments, just the other side of the Eldon Centre, so about 15 minutes walk.

After leaving Newcastle Jamie continues his tour around England.  Hopefully you are lucky enough to already have tickets as he’s already sold out at Birmingham Symphony Hall on Thursday 13th May and Liverpool Philharmonic on Friday 14th.  The following Monday he’s at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and for his final week of UK tour dates before jetting off to Portugal, catch him at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham, on Monday 21st or your last chance is at Bristol’s Colston Hall on Tuesday 22nd May
